Building on the remarkable success of Porsche's full size Cayenne SUV (now its best-seller), the German automaker famous for the 911 sports car has introduced a smaller crossover, the Macan. As New York Times auto critic points out in a new review, fans of Porsche's sports cars should be excited as profits from the SUVs drive improvements in Boxsters, Caymans and 911s.

The Macan S model tested bolted from 0-60 mph in five seconds flat - not bad for an SUV of any size. Base Macans have a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The S models get more power, via a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that makes 340 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque.
